Caregivers should educate the substance abuser and his/her relatives or friends.

___1.) EDUCATE RELATIVES AND FRIENDS. Persuade the relatives and friends of the substance abuser to become acquainted with literature on addiction and related issues such as codependence. Encourage them to attend a local support group for friends and relatives. An introductory book for a relative or friend of a substance abuser is "Hold On  To Hope."  available at 1.800.723.1760 or E-mail: info@mentalhealthlibrary.info. A relative or friend of a substance abuser can obtain additional information concerning local support groups from Al-Anon and Alateen available at 1. 888.4AL.ANON  or E-mail: WSO@al-anon.org. Ask about Alcohol Recovery Program (ARP) at 1.800.453.3860.   

___2.) EDUCATE THE SUBSTANCE ABUSER. Encourage the substance abuser to become acquainted with literature on "addiction" and consider periodic attendance to local support groups. An introductory book for a substance abuser is "He Did Deliver Me From Bondage" available at 1.888.790.7040. A substance abuser can obtain additional information concerning local support groups from Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) at 1.212.870.3400 or E-mail: aa@aa.org.
