Support Groups
for Addictions

Most support groups for alcohol and other drug addictions are 12-Step Groups. Twelve-Step Groups are a worldwide fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism and other drug addictions  These groups typically meet weekly in a local church or community building. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking or be a relative or friend of alcoholic or addict. These groups adhere to what is referred to as "The 12-Steps". These are 12 principles that embody what is believed to be universal steps of recovery that are applicable to everyone whatever his/her personal creed. There are no dues or fees for 12-Step membership. Twelve-Step Groups are not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution.  However, most 12-Step groups promote increased spirituality and a belief in a higher power. The primary purpose of a 12-Step Group is to stay sober and help other alcoholics, drug addicts, and their families. Twelve-Step Groups do not provide professional treatment. There are no mental health professionals facilitating a 12-Step Group. Only those who have experienced addiction or been a friend or family of someone who has experienced addiction are involved with the meetings.
There are 12-Step Groups for those with alcohol problems Alcoholics Anonymous- A.A.; narcotic problems Narcotics Anonymous (N.A.); marijuana problems Marijuana Anonymous (M.A.); cocaine problems Cocaine Anonymous (CA); and most other drugs. In addition there are separate 12-Step Groups for friends and family members of those with alcohol problems Al-Anon and Alateen and those with general "codependence" Co-Dependents Anonymous (CoDa).
